On this, the first Tuesday of November, the City of Melbourne shuts down for a horse race. It’s for “the race that stops a nation”, the Melbourne Cup. It is an old, old trophy; the first running was in 1861.

We celebrate this event in Auckland by running an office pool. or “sweepstakes”, to redistribute income amongst coworkers. Just like in a real race, there are prizes for horses placing first through third. At 5:00, we checked out and headed over to the Hyatt lobby to watch the race.

And you wouldn’t believe it, but the bar was FULL. Full of people eating pistachios and watching the horse race. After lots of small talk with our company folk, the race all of a sudden started…and three-and-a-half minutes later, it was over. Nobody left the bar; the chatting continued. It’s this surreal mid-week party event that everybody shows up for dressed to the nines and celebrates the fine art of horses shredding turf.

As for my pool entries, because I know you are dying to hear, my horses were first and second up until the final turn, when they were passed by the eventual winners. I did manage to hold onto third place and $6, which covered my Race Club admission for the week…ignoring the fact that I spent $10 on pool entries.

And that is my Melbourne Cup story.
