Hayley Westenra is one of those “classical crossover” singers that make for great gifts to the easy listening lover that you don’t know what else they would like.  They are generally more muted than operatics, which is where that super sweet sound comes from.

That sound is what I alluded to yesterday.  Just before a symphony in the park performance I was planning on attending but didn’t because it was kinda drizzly and I was kinda tired, Dame Kiri was asked about Hayley and absolutely ripped into their skills and lack of training and talent.  Reading it was sort of “ouch” back in February, and Hayley never ever commented on those comments.  I guess even classical singers can get snippy.

As for Hayley, she does a lot of movie soundtracks (Wikipedia lists a few Disney movies her singing was featured in) and performs with a group of women singers.  She also does a lot of work for UNICEF and is a pescetarian

Here are a couple of videos of Hayley in concert, singing the usual classical concert fare.  “Amazing Grace”…

…and “Ave Maria”.
