This is a must listen post.

I’ve managed to get a lot of blogging done this month by advance posting during “dull” moments.  This is key, as right now I am supposed to be updating a report I worked on today on a commercial wind farm application but am instead hammering out all sorts of musical blog posts and circulating notice of these to interested parties.

The reason for the flurry of posts is that as you read this, I am currently running in – possibly finishing – the Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon.  This is my third half since September.  Running is awesome, and I don’t suck too much at it.  And as usual, I am flying Air New Zealand.  Kiwis don’t like the airline, but I sure do. As I am travelling, I want to introduce you to my travelling song.

Like all the airlines, Air New Zealand has an in-flight animation showing you where you are on your flight, some flight statistics (how high up you are, the temperature outside, etc), the overall route, and so forth.  It’s far prettier than Air Canada’s.  Anyway, I think there is a technical glitch with the music choice associated with it.  Let me explain…

When I flew home for my Christmas surprise visit, I couldn’t sleep but was desperate for shuteye.  They shut down the movie system for a little bit so I put on the in-flight mapping which was playing Evermore‘s then-latest CD, Real Life, in the background.  But it kept re-setting during the third track of that CD, meaning that every ten minutes this song would replay.  I never really did fall asleep, and the movie system was kept off for a couple hours, and it was a most wonderful two hours thinking about snowbanks and chocolate covered peanut butter balls and driving on the correct/right hand side of the road and root beer and corn chips and salsa.

The music video is lame and harkens back to the carefree days of backpacking through someplace, but I immediately associate the song with happy travels.  The song is called “Running” and if it is the only song you hear all week, then my job here is done.

The highest number of times I have played this song consecutively is six (pronounced kinda like, “sux” in New Zealand English).  “Light Surrounding You” also came from this album and is used in promos for TV One here.  It was the band’s first number one hit.

Shock alert: this are my favourite “commercial,” “Coldplayish” New Zealand performer.  Shock alert: they aren’t based in New Zealand anymore, either.  Shock alert: their music videos bore me, so maybe you should have pushed “play” and walked away from the computer just now.

Hey…they have a decent sound….more enjoyable than some you’ve written about….agree that the video’s are hum-drum….the second video…the first line of the song…I see you by the water…and he’s in a field ???? Regardless….thanks for the education.

Hi Joe! good luck with your half marathon! I signed up for what will be my first half marathon recently — the toronto marathon in October. If you have any good training tips, please enlighten me.
