Goodnight Kiwi Returning?

Not that I’m from here or have a stake in anything, but Goodnight Kiwi is coming back!  Or so the New Zealand Herald reports.

I introduced you to the Goodnight Kiwi back in January.  TV NZ wants to reintroduce the cuddly night watchman to prime time television to inform parents that “mature content” television is about to start.  Fyi, that’s 8:30 PM in New Zealand.

Everything old is new again.  The Goodnight Kiwi t-shirt is NZ$50 at Mr Vintage.  I talked myself out of it a few months ago, but now I’m thinking “Yis!”

Canada on Strike.

As you won’t know, episode 1204 of South Park is entitled “Canada on Strike.” It parodies the Writer’s Guild of America strike.

There’s a running gag through the episode. Somebody turned it into this music video.

Alternate link.

You do know you can now view whole episodes online at the revamped South Park Studios, right?

Pavlova on jPod.

Not that you would have noticed, as I am the only person in the world who watches jPod (downloaded the night it airs), I am proud to report that Carol Jarlewski is making pavlova next Sunday to thank Kam Fong for burying Dwight’s corpse and not telling Jim.

Pavlova – food of the gods.  And also a New Zealand creation (don’t let the Aussies tell you otherwise).

The Sunday Night Movie on C4.

As a co-op student many years ago on my work terms, I would watch America’s Funniest Home Videos Sunday nights at 7pm on The New VR (formerly CKVR, now A-Channel).  I would be finishing off my laundry at this point and contemplating making either tacos or opening up a can of Chef Boyardee something-or-other.  My chicken or beef would be browning in between groin kicks and seagulls deep throating hot dogs.  By the end of the show I would have wonderfully awesome tacos and be ready for the Simpsons and whatever animation was on afterwards.

That’s how I rung out my weekend for eight months.  As a professional in Barrie, my Sundays typically run longer nowadays.  Actually, they are usually shorter.

In New Zealand, I do have an equivalent program to ring out my weekends that I think is way more self-indulgent than even AFV.  Sol’s (a beer) Sunday Night Movie on C4.

It’s pretty genius actually.  They throw on a third- or fourth-run film that has already been flogged to death and has instant caché with nostalgic culture vultures like me.  It runs two to two-and-a-half hours with loads of commercial breaks for me to do laundry, send e-mails or write a blog post.  My first few months in Auckland, I wouldn’t miss the movie for the world.  Then the movies got dull and I started making friends and wasn’t around as often to watch movies (at least at home…the theatre movies are awesome this month).

To the best of my memory, so far I have watched:

  • Sixteen Candles
  • The Breakfast Club
  • Wayne’s World 2
  • The Neverending Story (why I survived it, I’ll never know)
  • And tonight, I’ll be watching Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life

That’s how weak my memory is and how indulgent these films are.  From C4’s website, upcoming films include:

  • Revenge of the Nerds
  • Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
  • Edward Scissorhands
  • Installments of the Mad Max trilogy
  • And the second-highest grossing English language Canadian movie ever, Porky’s

(To be clear, I wrote this before the movie so I could relax this Sunday night.  I did run 19k this morning and feel I deserve the break.)

I’m still hammering out some part-time writing work and long hours at the office, so I found TV2’s sign-off vignette from the 1980s for your viewing enjoyment.

It is a Maori lullaby whose words are meant to console an upset child to sleep.  “Hine” means “little girl,” so that’s who the song is tailored to.

I’ll be back on my game this week, when I am not training for my next half marathon on March 2nd.

Still tied up in other writing this week. The cyclone is over.

This commercial just aired on the station I have on in the background tonight. It was the song that struck me and I quickly noticed that, like many outdoor urban scenes in New Zealand, it was shot around my building and neighbourhood.

The opening scenes are shot at the main train station (Britomart) which is also a key bus transfer point. The big “wn” in behind the dancing parking enforcement officer is my grocery store.  At the beginning of the road crew scene, you will notice a series of (apartment) towers in the background.  I do my hill training just to the left of the left-most tower.

Some Pretty Shocking TV.

There are some crazy television commercials here. For an air freshener, for instance:
